Only Love can fill..
Comes a Time in 85 was a tune that confirmed to me that there was a present happening for this band. (Not just an oldies band.)
I caught a bunch of soulful versions of this song usually in the last ballad of the night spot.
Great comment by Garcia that Comes a Time goes right into Sailor>Circumstance! Which you can hear them grooving towards.
Just to go back to the Tons of Steele The false start reveals an underbelly to the tune they never explored.
Also like Brent's vocal coda on the keeper second version.
85 was a good year for the Half Step. As I remember the Nassau 85 blew me away. and never mind the psychedelic mayhem of 85 Red Rocks 3rd night.
Jack Straw>They put some renewed gusto into the Jack Straw .
Some of those East Coast shows it was like a group meltdown
for that last jam.
B.E. Women. -If there was any 1st set tune that was liable to unhinge me it was Brown Eyed. I just loved this tune.
Jerry could jam this but his vocals declined and he really needed all the backing vocals the band could muster.
NFA- the worst thing that ever happened to NFA in hindsight was Throwing Stones. Who knew? I enjoyed it at the time-I guess that is what mattered.
They opened a Second Set at MSG with NFA and I felt like the tune was released from bondage.
So I gave this a 4 because the sound is a little muddy here and there but this is a really cool look at the inner workings of the band.
With all the issues they had in 1985 I felt it was a rocking year , where they would just jam from tune to tune at will.
Sometimes running the freight train for the entire 2nd set.
UJB>Playin'.UJB Reprise- Yeah that is a cool twist on the PITB with
UJB in the middle. Personally, I loved to hear them jam these tunes. I always felt like it was an out of body type experience.
I mean they could have closed a few 1st sets with that and blow us all away.
Anyway, if you are a Head you know there is something very special about hearing Playin and UJB together.
Can't really put a tangible explanation to it.
SO FAR was a real cool video and it was the best light for Throwing Stones if only they had shelved the tune after that video and I don't know used the final slot of the night for Viola Lee Blues, Cryptical, St. Stephen, WRS, Lost Sailor, Lazy Lightning,DARKSTAR,
Blues for Allah, Help >Slip >Franklins, Scarlet>Fire, UNBROKEN CHAIN, Casey Jones.
Anyway one nice thing about Furthur was they went and explored some of those possibilities. but alas our beloved Fat Man had already left the arena.
There is some great drums>Space labeled TMP to close this out.
